Box Canvas - 40mm Deep Edge

Box Canvas - 40mm Deep Edge

The canvas you reach for when the work matters. Forty-millimetre deep edge, 300gsm 100% PET, drum-tight from the moment it leaves the factory. Bevelled strainer edges so brushwork carries clean to the corners with no surprise lines. Fabric folded — never cut — at the corners, leaving full bleed if it's ever restretched years from now. The canvas ACF was built on. The first product. Still the one that quietly outperforms everything else on the wall.

"The super smooth surface is an absolute pleasure to paint on, and tight as you like. I'm definitely a forever fan."

Paint without compensating.

  • Drum-tight from the first stroke - and the hundredth
  • Bevelled strainer edges so brushwork carries clean to the corners
  • Corners folded, never cut - full bleed if it's ever restretched years from now
  • Holds oil without sinking
  • Takes heavy texture without denting

What 100% PET changes.

  • Cotton and linen react to humidity. PET doesn't - tension stays where you set it.
  • The fabric is woven specifically for artist use, not generic sailcloth dressed up with primer.
  • The gesso is ours. Developed for this fabric over a decade with practising oil and acrylic artists.
  • Manufactured end-to-end in our own factory - proprietary fabric, proprietary coating, proprietary strainer.
  • Polyester durability has been independently studied: the Victoria & Albert Museum found no measurable loss of strength under museum conditions equivalent to 80 years of display.

What you've been compensating for.

  • Cotton and linen go slack as humidity changes - sometimes within the same painting session
  • Pine strainers warp because modern fast-grown timber isn't built to last
  • Surface absorbs oil unevenly, leaving blotches you didn't ask for
  • Canvas dents under palette knife pressure or texture work
  • Restretching, replacing, restoring - none of which should be normal

The build.

  • 300gsm 100% PET artist canvas with ACF's proprietary gesso coating
  • 40mm deep-edge profile, gallery-wrap ready
  • Bevelled strainer edges to prevent surface lines under brushwork
  • Corners folded (not cut) for full restretching bleed
  • MDF strainer system - dimensionally stable, no pine warping
  • Pre-prepared and ready to paint - no priming required for most mediums
  • Sold in packs of 2
  • Available from small study sizes up to 1000mm × 1000mm
  • Manufactured in South Africa
  • Traditional canvas

    • Cotton or linen fabric - reacts to humidity, tension drifts
    • Pine strainers - warp with modern fast-grown timber
    • Standard absorbent ground - soaks oil unevenly, leaves blotches
    • Dents under palette knife or heavy texture work
    • Often needs restretching within a single lifetime
  • ACF Box Canvas

    • 100% PET fabric - moisture stable, tension holds
    • MDF strainer system - dimensionally consistent, won't warp
    • Proprietary gesso - even oil holdout, no blotching
    • Built to take palette knife and heavy texture without denting
    • Polyester proven stable across the equivalent of 80 years of museum display (V&A research)

Questions artists ask

Do I need to prime or gesso this canvas before painting?

No. The canvas arrives pre-coated with our proprietary gesso, ready to paint straight from the box - for oils, acrylics, mixed media and fluid art. You can apply additional gesso if your technique calls for it, but it isn't required. TIP: For oils, mixing mineral turps and linseed oil into your underpainting works particularly well on this surface.

Will the canvas stay tight over time?

Yes. The fabric is 100% PET, which doesn't react to humidity the way cotton or linen does, so tension stays where you set it. The strainer is MDF - dimensionally stable, no pine warping. Independent research at the Victoria & Albert Museum found polyester showed no measurable loss of strength under museum conditions equivalent to 80 years of display.

Can I use oils, acrylics and heavy texture on it?

Yes. The 300gsm PET surface holds oil evenly without sinking, takes acrylics without absorption issues, and handles palette knife and impasto work without denting. For oils, mixing mineral turps and linseed oil into your underpainting works particularly well on this surface.

How many canvases come in a pack, and what sizes are available?

Box Canvas is sold in packs of 2. Sizes range from small study formats up to 1000mm × 1000mm (40″ × 40″) and an A0 (1189mm x 781mm) Every canvas in the pack is matched in tension and finish.
