Questions artists ask
What are ACF canvases made of?
100% polyester. Thin edge stretch canvases are 260gsm, deep edge Box Canvas and Box Board Canvas are 300gsm, and the Watercolour Canvas is 240gsm with a watercolour ground. The Eco Canvas, made from 100% recycled polyester, is sold in South Africa only.
Should I choose thin edge or deep edge?
Thin edge, 20mm (0.8 in), is lighter and slimmer, and suits lighter work or a floating frame. Deep edge, 40mm (1.6 in), is a gallery profile that stands out from the wall and hangs without a frame. See the Thin Edge range and the Deep Edge range.
Do I need to prime or gesso the canvas?
No. Every ACF canvas comes with our proprietary gesso coating and can be painted on as you receive it. For oil painters we recommend a mix of mineral turps and linseed oil with a dash of colour, though it is not needed. If you would like to add your own gesso, base coat or texture, you are welcome to. The Watercolour Canvas is the exception: it has our watercolour ground and should not be gessoed or coated.
Will the canvas stay tight?
Yes. The fabric is 100% polyester, which does not react to humidity the way cotton or linen does, so tension stays where it was set. The strainers are engineered to stay square and flat, with no pine warping. Independent research at the Victoria & Albert Museum found polyester showed no measurable loss of strength under museum conditions equivalent to 80 years of display.
How are ACF canvases sold?
In packs of the same size: Stretch Canvas in packs of 4, Deep Edge canvases and Watercolour Canvas in packs of 2, and Paint and Sip Canvas in packs of 10. Not every product is sold in every market.
