Stretch Canvas — 20mm Thin Edge

Built for daily painting. Twenty-millimetre thin edge, 260gsm 100% PET, drum-tight from the moment it leaves the factory. Bevelled strainer edges so brushwork carries clean to the corners with no surprise lines. Fabric folded — never cut — at the corners, with 36mm of bleed if it's ever restretched years from now. Originally developed to give art students something honest to learn on. Now quietly hanging in galleries around the world.

"The canvases are so smooth and stretched tightly like a drum! I’ve done one underpainting but I just know I don’t want to paint on anything else."

Paint without compensating.

  • Drum-tight from the first stroke - and the thousandth
  • Bevelled strainer edges so brushwork carries clean to the corners
  • Corners folded, never cut — 36mm of bleed if it's ever restretched years from now
  • Acrylics glide, oils don't sink, fluid art flows without sagging

What makes ACF Stretch Canvas different

  • Cotton and linen react to humidity. PET doesn't - tension stays where you set it.
  • The fabric is woven specifically for artist use, not generic sailcloth dressed up with primer.
  • The coating is ours. Developed over a decade with practising artists - tested across oils, acrylics, fluid art and palette knife work.
  • Manufactured end-to-end in our own factory - proprietary fabric, proprietary coating, and a strainer engineered specifically for the 20mm thin-edge profile.
  • Polyester durability has been independently studied: the Victoria & Albert Museum found no measurable loss of strength under museum conditions equivalent to 80 years of display.

Everyday canvas problems artists know

  • Cotton and linen go slack as humidity shifts - sometimes within a single session
  • Pine strainers warp because modern fast-grown timber isn't built to last
  • Cheap surfaces absorb paint unevenly - blotches and flow problems that aren't your technique
  • The canvas dents under palette knife or sags when fluid art is poured
  • A bad canvas teaches the wrong lesson. Paint behaves badly because the surface is wrong, not the artist.

The build.

  • 260gsm 100% PET artist canvas with ACF's proprietary coating
  • 20mm thin-edge profile — clean, lightweight, ready for floating frames or hanging solo
  • Bevelled strainer edges to prevent surface lines under brushwork
  • Bevelled strainer edges to prevent surface lines under brushwork
  • MDF strainer system — perfectly square and flat, no pine warping
  • Pre-prepared and ready to paint — no priming required for most mediums
  • Sold in packs of 4
  • Available from small study sizes up to 500mm × 500mm (20" × 20") and A1 (594mm × 841mm)
  • Manufactured in South Africa
  • Traditional canvas

    • Cotton or linen fabric — reacts to humidity, tension drifts
    • Pine strainers — warp with modern fast-grown timber
    • Standard absorbent ground — soaks paint unevenly, blotches the underpainting
    • Dents under palette knife pressure, sags under fluid art weight
    • Often needs restretching, restoring, or replacing within a single lifetime
  • ACF Stretch Canvas

    • 100% PET fabric — moisture stable, tension holds drum-tight
    • MDF strainer system — dimensionally consistent, won't warp
    • Proprietary coating — even paint flow, no blotching, no surprise absorption
    • Holds palette knife pressure and fluid art weight without complaint
    • Polyester proven stable across the equivalent of 80 years of museum display (V&A research)

Questions artists ask

Do I need to prime or gesso this canvas before painting?

No. The canvas arrives pre-coated with our proprietary coating, ready to paint straight from the box — for oils, acrylics, fluid art and mixed media. Some artists like to add a coat of gesso for personal preference or extra absorbency on detailed work, but it isn't required. TIP: For oils, mixing mineral turps and linseed oil into your underpainting works particularly well on this surface.

Will the canvas stay tight over time?

Yes. The fabric is 100% PET, which doesn't react to humidity the way cotton or linen does, so tension stays where you set it — through daily painting and however many sessions follow. The strainer is MDF — dimensionally stable, no pine warping. Independent research at the Victoria & Albert Museum found polyester showed no measurable loss of strength under museum conditions equivalent to 80 years of display.

Can I use oils, acrylics and fluid art on it?

Yes. The 260gsm PET surface holds oils evenly without blotching, takes acrylics without absorption issues, and handles fluid art and palette knife work without sagging or denting. Fluid artists particularly note the flow of paint moves more smoothly than on traditional cotton.

How many canvases come in a pack, and what sizes are available?

Stretch Canvas is sold in packs of 4. Sizes range from small study formats up to 500mm × 500mm (20" × 20") and A1 (594mm × 841mm). Every canvas in the pack is matched in tension and finish.
