Collection: Floating Frame Canvas Sets

Questions artists ask

What comes in a floating frame set?

The Thin Edge Oak Floating Frame set has 2 stretch canvases, 20mm (0.8 in) deep, and 2 white oak veneer floating frames. The Deep Edge Oak Floating Frame set has 2 box board canvases, 40mm (1.6 in) deep, and 2 white oak veneer floating frames. The Round Canvas Floating Frame comes as 2 round canvases with raw MDF floating frames.

What is the difference between the thin and deep oak frames?

The thin edge set uses a 20mm (0.8 in) Stretch Canvas (260gsm polyester) in a frame 23mm (0.9 in) deep with a 12mm (0.5 in) wall. The deep edge set uses a 40mm (1.6 in) Box Board Canvas (300gsm polyester stretched over a 3mm (1/8 in) HDF backing) in a frame 44mm (1.7 in) deep with a 16mm (0.6 in) wall. Both have a 5mm (0.2 in) shadow gap. The thin frame suits lighter work; the deep frame suits chunky or heavily textured pieces.

Can I take the canvas out of the oak frame?

Yes. The canvas is held in the oak frame with 4, 6 or 8 Phillips screws, depending on size, so it removes and refits easily: watch how in this short video.

Can I paint or stain the frame?

Yes. The oak veneer frames are easy to stain or paint to match your artwork. The Round Canvas Floating Frame is left as raw MDF, so you can paint, seal or finish it to suit your work.

Are the canvases ready to paint?

Yes. Every canvas in these sets comes with our proprietary gesso coating and can be painted on as you receive it. For oil painters we recommend a mix of mineral turps and linseed oil with a dash of colour, though it is not needed. You are welcome to add your own gesso, base coat or texture if you like.
