Thin Edge Oak Floating/Canvas

Well made and very well packed on arrival at my home in UK. Very impressed with the surface, it feels great applying oil paint, also used some paste for texture. It took well to the canvas. Love the floating frame. I'm hooked!!

I absolutely love these canvas and frame sets

I absolutely love these canvas and frame sets. This was my second purchase, having bought a set of 30 x 40cm ones before. The canvas is great to paint on, so taut it's like a drum and the finished paintings look amazing in the frames. I'm currently working on a painting using the new 30 x 30cm canvas and it's going really well. I can't imagine using anything else now.

Great framed canvas at a great price. They were packed well for shipping. All my frames were received in great shape.

I’ve painted on two canvasses to date and ordered two more

I’ve painted on two canvasses to date and ordered two more. My painting methods suit these tight surfaces but a colleague in the studios has commented that the canvasses look fragile (translucent) and could be easily damaged in gallery storage. I’m not sure what she means by this but it makes one think. The only doubt that I have is that the matching frames are possibly not to gallery standard as they’re not solid wood but I think they’ll look fine in the end if I wax them. Overall I’m hopeful that these canvas and frame sets will prove themselves to be excellent value. They’re certainly a whole lot of fun to paint on.

Hi Imogen. Please do get your colleague to send me a video - let them take their finger and poke a hole in my canvas. I'll gladly send you a full set as a replacement if they get it right. (PS: I'm not going to pay for their medical treatment for a broken finger) Good luck. PS: When they fail, can I get the other star?

I can't praise these enough

I can't praise these enough, absolutely fantastic canvases. Although you may initially think they are on the edpensiv side, when you take into account you get 2 incredible canvases that come with solid wood floating frames, they actually prove to be very cost effective. I simply can't praise these enough, they genuinely change the way in which I enjoy the painting process.

I was looking for a canvas that unleashedmy creative juices and had the bonus of coming with a subtle floating frame. ACF have got it bang on. My art will provide a horizontal series of artworks, leading the eye to an end wall. A great partnership between artist and canvas.

Very nice canvas. The acrylic paint just glides on and also it doesn't dry immediately so gives a bit extra time for blending.

Do I need to prime or gesso this canvas before painting?

No. The canvas arrives pre-coated with our proprietary gesso, ready to paint straight from the frame, for oils, acrylics, mixed media and fluid art. You can apply additional gesso if your technique calls for it, but it isn't required. TIP: For oils, mixing mineral turps and linseed oil into your underpainting works particularly well on this surface.

What makes this different from the deep edge oak version?

Two things: the canvas and the frame. The Thin Edge uses our 20mm Stretch Canvas (260gsm 100% Virgin Polyester on an engineered strainer) in a slim 23mm oak profile - designed to frame lighter work without overpowering it. The Deep Edge uses our 40mm Box Board Canvas (300gsm 100% Virgin Polyester stretched over a 3mm HDF backing for a rigid surface) in a thicker oak profile that suits chunky or heavily textured pieces. Both share the same proprietary canvas system underneath and the same Phillips screw canvas-to-frame attachment (4, 6 or 8 screws, depending on size).

Will the canvas and frame stay stable over time?

Yes. The 100% Virgin Polyester fabric doesn't react to humidity the way cotton or linen does, so tension stays where you set it. The engineered strainer system is dimensionally stable: no pine warping. The oak veneer floating frame uses an engineered particle board core, chosen because solid hardwood warps unpredictably. Independent research at the Victoria & Albert Museum found polyester showed no measurable loss of strength under museum conditions equivalent to 80 years of display.

How many canvases and frames come in a pack, and what sizes are available?

The Thin Edge Oak Combo is sold in pairs: 2 canvases and 2 oak floating frames, matched and square on arrival. Sizes go up to 500mm × 500mm or A1 (594mm × 841mm). Each canvas is pre-drilled and pre-screwed into its matching frame, attached with 4, 6 or 8 Phillips screws, depending on size.
