Questions artists ask

Do I need to prime or gesso this canvas before painting?

No. The canvas arrives pre-coated with our proprietary gesso, ready to paint straight from the box - for oils, acrylics, mixed media and fluid art. You can apply additional gesso if your technique calls for it, but it isn't required. TIP: For oils, mixing mineral turps and linseed oil into your underpainting works particularly well on this surface.

Will the surface stay still and rigid over time?

Yes. The 3mm HDF backing is pressed and moisture resistant - it won't warp, swell or lose rigidity. The 100% Virgin Polyester canvas doesn't react to humidity the way cotton or linen does, so tension stays where you set it. Independent research at the Victoria & Albert Museum found polyester showed no measurable loss of strength under museum conditions equivalent to 80 years of display.

Can I use oils, acrylics, fine liners and heavy texture on this canvas?

Yes. The 300gsm Polyester surface holds oil evenly, takes acrylics cleanly, and the rigid HDF backing supports fine liners, acrylic markers, palette knife and impasto without bouncing or denting. Charcoal and soft pastels work well too - the rigid surface prevents the shock that causes pigments to flake off.

How many canvases come in a pack, and what sizes are available?

Box Board Canvas is sold in packs of 2. Sizes range from small study formats up to 1000mm × 1000mm (40″ × 40″) and A0 (841mm × 1189mm). Every canvas in the pack is matched in finish and rigidity.
