Questions artists ask

Does this panel need to be sealed before painting (PLEASE READ!!)

Yes, please follow the MITRA Insights on Preparing HDF

To enhance HDF's archival qualities, MITRA suggests:

- Sealing both sides and all edges of the panel with a high-quality acrylic dispersion (e.g., GAC 100 or an equivalent sealer).

- Following up with an acrylic gesso or another suitable primer to create a barrier that reduces potential acidity migration from the HDF and improves paint adhesion.

Why use HDF instead of plywood

HDF gives you a smoother more even surface with no visible grain or knots, which makes it better for artists who want a cleaner flatter painting ground.

What kind of techniques is it good for

It works well for oils collage, mixed media, palette knife work, heavy layering and resin pouring because the panel stays firm and does not sag like a stretched surface.

Before I buy this, should I consider Box Board Canvas instead?

Yes, depending on how you plan to use it. Box Board Canvas gives you the same solid support as the Box Board Frame Panel, but with our PET canvas already stretched over the HDF surface. That saves you the sealing and preparation step, while still giving you a firm, stable painting surface.
